As @Jo_Pitts1 said, is this indeed dramatic? Do you have the comparable stats from the same time last year? Did you change anything in the type of emails that were sent (more emails without clickable content)?

I suspect the concern about progressive profiling is not so much about the technical possibilities, but the duplicates being a concern. If there's a lot of dupes I can imagine it gets messy.

Of course where possible these would be batches, but in some cases triggers are in fact the better choice.
