Have you considered using the new Program Member Custom Fields? They do have some drawbacks compared to regular fields on the lead record, but are very suitable for a use case like this. Not entirely sure how to make this work, as it would require a definition of how long is too long and counts as a delay.An alternative would be to include a notification when finished, so the user knows when they can progress to the next step. Could be easier to implement.

If you use a mirror opt-in field storing a "copy" of the original opt-in you can make that work with field visibility rules.Of course, having as a standard feature would be nice, but it is not all that difficult to set up with existing functionality.
