I'm a web, database, and network architect based in NYC, with specializations in the financial services, publishing, and SaaS sectors. I build complex Marketo integrations for companies large and small... and can make Marketo forms and emails do things you never thought possible! Check out my blog at https://blog.teknkl.com, which has Marketo-specific technical insights you won't see anywhere else, along with wider topics from my programming and systems work.

  • Re: Brainteaser: Why does this line of Velocity code work?

Let me add that the right answer/explanation will include the name of a specific Java class (and it's a class not mentioned in the blog post itself).

  • Brainteaser: Why does this line of Velocity code work?

My favorite part of Velocity training sessions — though surely students’ least favorite! — is challenging someone to explain why something worked, as opposed to why something fails fatally. It’s easy to barrel through Velocity without realizing the complex stuff happening under the hood. If Velocity ...

  • Re: Accurately background-loading the MktoForms2 global object

Don't see what you're describing with Lighthouse at all. As seen here, a page using the method above scores 100/100 for performance. (Same 100/100 on Desktop and Mobile.) We wouldn't be prescribing a purposeful delay in the human usability of the page out of fear of an automated test result.

  • Accurately background-loading the MktoForms2 global object

To use the Forms 2.0 JS API – including simply loading a form — you call methods on the global object window.MktoForms2. MktoForms2.loadForm loads a form, MktoForms2.whenReady and MktoForms2.whenRendered add custom behaviors, and so on.More to the point: MktoForms2 is Forms 2.0.Sticking with the de...

  • Re: Sending an SMS using Twilio

Hi Simon, can I ask you to open a new thread in Products (nation.marketo.com/t5/Products/ct-p/products)? That'll give better visibility than blog comments, which are frequently overlooked. Give a link back to this blog post for context.

  • Running Subject Line AB tests with segmented Subjects

I like to distinguish Dynamic Content™ — when you literally right-click and choose Make Dynamic in the Marketo Editor UI — from “dynamic content” in the broader sense. The ™ version is just one type of dynamic content, though it’s the easier type to master. The other type, more powerful but admittedl...

  • Consolidating Email Link Performance report links using VBA

My buddy Todd says, “If you’re writing VBA, you’re probably doing it wrong.” (He means you should be using a built-in Excel function instead.)I’d probably go further: if you opened Excel, you're probably doing it wrong.☺ But it’s lots of people’s default data tool, so you’ve gotta roll with it.Once ...

  • The definitive guide to setting up copyright year {{my.tokens}} for Em...

Despite some recurring wishful (Christmas-wishful?) thinking on the Marketo Community, no, Marketo does not have a {{system.token}} that outputs only the current year. You have to build your own token — or rather, at least two {{my.tokens}}, one for Emails (using Velocity) and one for LPs (using Jav...

  • Appending the referrer’s query string to the current URL

User JD asked a question on Marketo Nation that I thought was worth a quick writeup here as well. I'm looking to keep URL query string parameters when passed from my 3rd party (https) page to my Marketo LP (also https) before Munchkin loads so I can trigger off the “Visits Web Page” trigger.Getting ...

  • Avoiding the dreaded “Invalid Image URL” error with tokenized assets

It’s holiday email time and you’re feeling strategic.Rather than trying to manage signature snippets — or, even worse, cloning entire emails — you upload your sales team’s headshots into Design Studio. You choose a great naming convention: -med.png (“med” for medium-size, in case you want to add othe...
