Josh - I've been diggin in to this; whenever we create an email using the blank template, it defaults ot NONE and under the "Used By" tab it shows the template isnt being used. have you seen this before?

In my experience it means that Salesforce itself was temporarily unavailable - the sync should pick up and start again when it is. Usually only lasts a few minutes unless there is a serious Salesforce outage.
