Can you post an example of the link you are trying to create that won't let you append the mkt_tok portion?
I'm not sure what limitations you're encountering. If you are using a third party to create the landing page templates, why can't you just plug that HTML into Marketo? Have you watched this course? https://community.marketo.com/MarketoBeyondBasicTemplates
Hard to troubleshoot without seeing anything. I would contact support as they can get right into your instance.
We use {{trigger.Referrer}} - the only issue is it gives the full URL. I supposed we could use JS to pull the data we wanted out of the string, but for now we are making due with the long URL.

One thing that killed us in the beginning was failing to realize that any custom fields you want synced between the two systems MUST be created in SFDC.
