In Marketo, go to the admin section and check for the fields under "Field Management." My guess is you will find that Marketo sees the lead field and the contact field as two separate fields because of the delay in creating the contact field. Have you confirmed that the user you are trying to email is eligible to receive emails? Check to make sure: The email address is valid They have not unsubscribed They are not marketing suspended The email is not currently suspended They are not on your blacklist

I don't think Marketo will even let you change the field type if it has data in it.
Like Jason, we have an MQL date field on leads. When they are converted to SQLs there is a separate date field for that, too.
