Marketo for Internal Comms

Does any one in the community have experience leveraging marketo beyond customer engagement and into internal comms for your organization.

Marketo's fundamentals will no doubt meet most of the requirements for internal communication but wonder if it something people take advantage of and what would be the pros and cons of doing such a thing.

Thanks

Jacqueline

I would suggest against doing this, as your using a 3rd party app to transport internal data and you could risk it being leaked or even sent externally.

Thanks Frank.  Can I note manage that risk with partitions?  Do you know of anyone who has done this.

I do understand where you are coming from and we are discussing these risks internally.

Thanks

Re: Marketo for Internal Comms

I was told by my IT team that using Marketo in this way was risky as someone could intercept the email when it goes out to the web to send, I think they where more coming from the point of view of a hacker not your standard day to day person. Using a partition would help a lot and you would reduce risk too. Also our Legal team advised against it from the same point of view of IT. If you don't have these blockers/concerns Marketo certainly is a great platform to use, it will allow you to get quick stats arounds sends, opens, clicks, etc... which will help you build more powerful internal communications.

Re: Marketo for Internal Comms

I agree there is some security risk because the email will go outside of your system and your spam settings on your corp servers may block important emails that all have to see. Another risk is an inexperienced employee has the wrong level of access or just doesn't pay attention and sends that critical CEO memo out to the entire lead database. Whoops.

I worked with a couple of firms that did this and we did a few things:

  • partition and workspace for employee data
  • marked data to not go to crm
  • emails typically like newsletter (as Christina suggests)
  • HR sometimes manages candidate newsletters this way too.

So you can, but should you?

Re: Marketo for Internal Comms

Something tells me they haven't flagged a concern about marketing emails being maliciously altered in transit (which is just as "easy," once you're worrying about intercepting plaintext between Marketo and your corporate mailserver)....

Re: Marketo for Internal Comms

I'm using it for internal marketing within my company - we're moving to a Revenue Marketing organization and the changes are very obvious to Marketing but harder for Engineering, Finance, etc to understand so we've started a quarterly newsletter sent from Marketo so we can see who is engaged / interested. This is especially helpful to track engagement for executives from other departments who are struggling with seeing the value of our changes.

You pay per stored email address so hopefully you're not paying a lot for this.  Also, oftentimes your ESP might block the email since it knows it didn't originate on this system.

Unless your internal DNS server has an SPF entry for mktomail.com that doesn't include Marketo's IP ranges, that's pretty unlikely (and if it did, that would mean you were blocking test marketing emails from Marketo, too).

Yes, and it happens.
