Issue The deep link in a Marketo email does not redirect to the designated App.   Solution By design in Marketo, when tracking is enabled for a link, the link will be wrapped with a tracking link like 'http://test.website.com/[unique sequence of characters]'. So when a tracked link is clicked, the link 'http://test.website.com/[unique sequence of characters]' is first loaded in a browser then redirects to the actual link in the same browser. Therefore, as some deep link configuration can depend on the actual link first loading, a tracked link in Marketo does not redirect to the App. One workaround here is to disable Marketo tracking link so that the deep link will redirect to the App. However, the trade-off of this is that the click link activity will not be recorded in Marketo.

Issue Sometimes, you may notice that editing the text version also affects the HTML version of the email. Is there a way to edit the text version without the same edits occurring to the HTML version? Solution Changes to TEXT never apply to the HTML version. It's likely because when you "save" an element, it will add the "root block element" to the HTML side if one isn't present. So, your HTML is probably not handling it correctly. Issue You want to use a Marketo Form in an email. Solution Forms cannot be used in email. Forms rely on using scripts to be able to pull and send data, but email clients will usually scrub or prevent the execution of scripting languages such as Javascript for security reasons. Note: Including scripts in your email can increase the chances of your email being classified as spam as well.

Issue When you send an email that was cloned from a previous campaign and updated, the sent email shows the old content rather than the new content. Solution This can be caused by Dynamic Content in the email.  If you clone an email with Dynamic Content but only update the default content, then the old content will be sent to leads who are not part of the default segmentation.  Open the email in the editor and see what email elements are displayed in the Dynamic tab.     Check the different segments in the editor and see which ones have the old content. You can update the dynamic content for each segment or simply make the content static, which will make the email use the default content for all leads.

Examples:  The email could be located in Design Studio The email is within a program but the token is not defined in the program it is in, or the campaign folder it is in In all cases, the email must be within the program or campaign folder that contains the My Tokens.

Issue Clicking a tracked link in an email either leads to a 404 page or the fallback page. Environment Tracked links Tokens Specific Characters: "#", "$", unbalanced brackets "{" or "}" Solution Do not use the following characters "#", "$", unbalanced brackets "{" or "}" in a link that is tracked when using a token as well. For example: www.google.com/ebook-download.html?ebook={{lead.ebook}}# This will not work and will either direct to a 404 page or redirect to fallback page. When hovering over the link you will see that it is not a normal tokenized link, it will contain something along the lines of: $mktEncrypt.encrypt($mkturl2)/<random characters> Root Cause When using tokens in the url of a tracked link, the email is processed and the tokens are substituted and populated with the correct information. The engine that assembles this information have some characters reserved for use such as #.

Setting an email to "operational" does the following No unsubscribe link automatically added Email will be sent to leads set to Unsubscribed Email will be sent to leads set to Marketing Suspended   Note - when sending an operational message, Unsubscribed and Marketing Suspended leads will still be included in the "blocked from email" count on the schedule tab of the campaign.   When is it OK to use the operational setting?   Sending marketing email to unsubscribed addresses is illegal. For this reason, you should be extremely careful to only use this setting in extremely limited circumstances. Using this setting incorrectly violates Marketo's Terms of Service, and most antispam laws. There may be legal consequences for using this setting incorrectly. Good uses of the operational setting fall into two categories: Transactional messages Relationship messages   What's a transactional message? A transactional message is part of a transaction that a lead has initiated and you are responding to. Here's some examples of transactional messages: Receipts for purchases Registration confirmations Download links in response to form fill-outs Requested assets (whitepapers, spec sheets, etc.)   What's a relationship message? A relationship message describes something that affects your business relationship with the lead. Here's some examples of relationship messages: Downtime notifications Changes to terms of service Recall notices End of service notifications   Operational messages should not contain any marketing content at all. In other words, do not use the operational setting to send a message that contains a receipt and a promotion, only a receipt.

By default, required fields on Marketo forms show a red asterisk to indicate that they're required. Here's how you can remove or change it.   Please ensure that you have access to an experienced Web developer. Marketo Technical Support is not set up to assist with troubleshooting code. Removing the asterisk The following CSS will remove the asterisk from your code. You can add this to one landing page by dragging in a Custom HTML element and pasting this in, or you can add it to your landing page template so it affects all your forms. <style type="text/css">   form.lpeRegForm li.mktFormReq label {     background: none !important;   } </style >   Changing the asterisk To change the required symbol, you need an image that you'd like to display instead of the asterisk. It needs to be 16x16px, and ideally you should make the background transparent. Create that image, then upload it to Marketo. Issue The URL for the landing page shows as "https" even though you do not have SSL set up on your Marketo instance, causing the browser to display a "Not Secure" warning.   Solution This can happen if the primary domain and DNS are SSL secure, but Marketo is not.  For instance, if your primary domain is "https://www.mycompany.com" (SSL secure) then the DNS, which is also SSL secure, will push down the "https" transfer protocol down to all the CNAMEs on that DNS.  This will force the Marketo landing page using the CNAME to use "https" in the URL, even though it is not secure. There are two ways to resolve this: Work with your IT department to see if there is a non-SSL option for your DNS Purchase SSL for your Marketo instance so that both your primary domain and your Marketo pages are SSL secure. If you would like to add SSL to your Marketo instance, please contact your Account Manager to see about adding that to your subscription.

Issue A lead has an Unsubscribe activity logged in their activity history, but they continue to receive emails after the Unsubscribe.     Solution An Unsubscribe activity is logged when the lead clicks the system Unsubscribe link embedded in a Marketo email.  However, if that link takes them to a Preference Center that allows them to select from multiple options, they may not choose the full unsubscribe option and may continue to receive selected emails.   To confirm if this is the case, find the Unsubscribe activity in their activity log and double-click on the activity to open it. This will show you the choices they selected in the email preferences form.  In the example below, the lead did not fully unsubscribe, they only chose to unsubscribe from specific content. Since they did not choose the global unsubscribe, they will continue to receive some emails.

Issue You are experiencing slow processing of campaigns, smart lists, and reports.     Solution There are three key components that can slow down an instance: Number of trigger campaigns: Trigger campaigns are always on, always listening.  If there are 50 campaigns triggering at the same time, all the 50 triggers will be in queue, slowing down your processing and routing inside Marketo. Solution: Reduce the number of Triggers. Convert some of the triggers to batches: Batches also run all the flow steps for every lead at once, instead of serially, which reduces total processing time.   Complexity of smart lists: The more complex a smart list, the harder it is for the system to figure it out, which increases backend processing and even creates campaign failures from timeouts. Solution: Reduce the number of nested smart lists called in a smart list. Whenever you ask Marketo to call another Smart List, it has to wait until all of the other smart lists finish, before putting together the final counts. Instead of Marketo looking for the list and running it, just put the filters in the trigger itself.   Volume of Leads: With regular cleaning and good systems design, it is fairly easy to keep your system running fast. Reduce the number of leads that can flow through with filters. Clean up the inactive leads at regular intervals.

Issue Reporting on separate links in an email that both point to the same URL Solution When there are duplicate links in an email, the performance of those links will be consolidated into a single row in the Analytics report, so if there are three links that point to the same URL, there will only be a single line for that link on the Performance report. If you would like to differentiate between these duplicates, you can add URL Parameters. Example: www.google.com   and    www.google.com?parameter=second-link In this example, Marketo Link Performance Reporting will show each individual link on Analytics Reporting, but both links will go to the same place.
