Also, how do you validate that there is an actual value for this field on the lead record? It's not in the lead info view or can't be added to smart list views...

Don't think so. Have you checked to see if there are any problems with the smart lists or if any emails have actually been sent via smart list build? Let us know what you've tried so far and what you've been able to determine.
