I fully support this solution. You can still use the current year in all your lead scoring and nurture programs with the contains constraint, but keep the history side by side in the same field. Best of both worlds.
Weird. Could it have maybe somehow been tied to the token size limit (they've only enforced the limit as of recently) of emails which is something like 130k? Based on your solution doesn't sound like that was the issue, but just a thought.
Glad to hear it worked for you! Now, make sure to tag your email other marketing efforts with GA UTM codes (source / medium / campaign) and you'll get all the data populating into GA for all of your landing pages.

What kind of registration? Are the pages you're liking to hosted on your site? Are they Marketo landing pages? Are they a part of a 3rd party platform? If you could provide more information on the links, how they're created, how they're distributed, etc. it would be helpful.
