Sounds more like an issue in getting your unsubscribe link to work properly (rather than your subscription center). Have a look at Grégoire Michel​'s The comprehensive guide to setting up the unsubscribe link

I would definitely log a Marketo Support ticket. Yet at the same time, loop in your CRM team to have a look. It sounds like a security role issue where the Marketo Sync User is unable to update existing records.

MPI is a paid add-on. It's been available for several months now. The items mentioned in the Fall '18 release notes were for some enhancements made to MPI.
