Just a real quick clarification: it will 'know' only if you're referencing a nurture campaign. Are you using the engagement module? If not, then it's basically a free for a all and will resend your email to people who have received it.
Are you testing in Gmail or a similar client? We've had things randomly change/populate like that based on renderings inside the email client itself.

Have you enabled forward to a friend? That'd be an easy way to capture information. Josh brings up a good point--it might not be worth the hassle to try and implement something that complex unless you have data proving that this happens frequently and you're missing out on leads.
