I am reading through a decently dated Marketo guide book, and I am to a section where it recommends setting up Nurture as a channel. I recognize the value in this, but is it still something that should be done with the current version of Marketo? In short, has Marketo progressed beyond having users set up the nurture channel manually, or if each channel that is part of the nurture is set up correctly do we still need to set up the nurture channel?

So, a lead's status in the Nurture campaign is going to be completely separate from any other Program. If you have Emails and campaigns in one Program, and you use those in the Nurture Program, they won't necessarily change the status in either Program.
The stream in your Nurture Program is designed to be a "set it and forget it" type of thing. You add the content that you feel will nurture leads in whatever stage you're working with, and then you have the stream send it to them in a constant drip. You can define a Success status in the Nurture Program if you like, but this would not affect any other Programs.

Hi Matthew,
New instances of Marketo should already have the Nurture channel created. You can see it in Admin > Tags > Channel.

I missed that when I looked last time. The break down is not very robust, just "member" and "influenced". I am assuming I will have to add all levels of success and actions here. If I am using other collateral will their tracking carry into the parent nurture campaign?
You can definitely add other Statuses to the channel if you like.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by other collateral, can you elaborate?
If I have my success and action criteria already defined for emails, landing pages, forms, etc. and I am using these pieces of collateral in the parent nurture campaign, do I need to co-define success for these steps in the nurture tag or will they all work together to progress the nurture flow? I do recognize that I may be over thinking this, entirely.

Thank you for all of your help! That answers my remaining questions.
