If you’re preparing to take a Marketo Engage certification test, you may be wondering what it’s like to take it remotely from your own home. I’ve compiled advice that I’ve gotten from other Marketo Engage Champions as well as my own experience taking the Adobe Certified Expert-Marketo Engage Business Practitioner (formerly Marketo Certified Expert) exam last year. I hope this helps set you up for success in your journey becoming Marketo Engage certified!

PSI vs Examity

There are two companies that provide remote administration of Marketo exams: PSI and Examity. PSI uses their own software to administer the exam. You can’t download or test your connection ahead of time, which can cause delays when you are ready to take your exam. Examity uses remote meeting software to proctor the exam (which you probably already have installed on your computer). This means you can test ahead of time and jump right into the exam when you log in.

I used Examity for my exam last year, and this is the provider recommended by many other Marketo Champions. Here are some tips and tricks for preparing for taking the test in Examity.

Remote Administration via Examity

First off, you need to be able to download remote meeting software on your computer—if you work at a company with tight Information Security policies, check with your IT department ahead of time. My proctor used GoToMeeting, although other people have reported that theirs was on Zoom. Since they’ll be monitoring you remotely, your computer needs a working camera and microphone.

Champion Tips for Examity Success

In order to make sure that the test is fair for everyone and that nobody is cheating, Examity has certain requirements and concerns that you should be prepared for:

  • External monitors are not allowed. I normally have my laptop plugged into a big monitor, so I rearranged my desk so that my laptop was up on a monitor riser at eye-level.
  • Headsets are not allowed, so make sure you can hear and be heard on your computer’s built-in microphone and speakers.
  • Your desk should be totally clear other than your computer, keyboard, and mouse. Nothing should be in arm’s reach. They may ask you to rotate your camera 360 degrees to make sure nothing is on the wall behind your laptop.
  • They may ask to see your glasses and/or watch. I recommend taking off your watch ahead of time so that’s one less thing to worry about.
  • You can not read questions out loud or even mouth the words, so if that’s something you often find yourself doing, practice doing so with your lips closed. (This was hard for me!)
  • Have your photo ID ready to show the proctor

I hope this helps you prepare for taking your Marketo Engage exam. Got any other tips on taking a remote exam? Post in the comments!

Amy, thank you soooo much for this information. I didn't receive any of these instructions from Examity, so I sincerely appreciate your insight. One thing that wasn't mentioned here is that I was required to show my proctor a government-issued ID.  So for anyone else that's about to take the exam, be sure to have that handy!

Great tips that aren't known until you've lived it!

I have one supplement or disclaimer to your last tip...

Do not use a nickname to sign up for the Marketo Certification Exam. It has to be the name EXACTLY how it is on your Driver's License or Identification Card.

I signed up as "Gabi" instead of "Gabrielle", and to my surprise, I had to reschedule my exam. No refund. In my case, one of my coworkers had signed me up, but honestly even if I had done it myself, I wouldn't have thought it was that strict. Please learn from my mistake... Be sure to review your Adobe Account Details BEFORE the day of the exam. 😉

Good luck!

@Amy_Goldfine Thank you for the great information!

Additionally, I was asked to face the wall as I had windows and glass door. Could be useful tip if you have any of these and rearrange your place beforehand.
