Thanks for sharing this! I would say that the era of coding out every single email from scratch is indeed dead, it's been dead for quite some time already actually; but you still need design and/or html expertise to create templates for your brand and for different use cases
As a short term solution - Marketo has a "SFDC Type" filter, try adding it to you smart campaign with a value "Contact" selected. In addition to RCA/RCE reports I subscribed our demand gen team to the smart lists related to our demand gen campaigns, this way they can see the quality of the leads (generic emails, students etc) coming from different sources and adjust media campaigns accordingly.
We have a custom "event" object in SFDC, it is synced with Marketo, we create an event program in Marketo with a trigger campaign "Was added to event"+ event name in constraint. It works for us, but it is rather cumbersome, so I am really looking forward to see updates on this from Marketo
