I'd put in a filter on all your scoring campaigns: Lead Status is not "SFDC Status to Be Excluded"
DemandTools!!! It's only a de-dupe tools for SFDC, but the merged Leads and Contacts are also reflected in Marketo.It allows you to create custom de-duplication scenarios to fit your database, which is why we went with it.
Unfortunately, this is not available at this time, but there is a workaround discussed here.
Also, I think that turning off some of the Activities such as Email Sent in the Sync Options menu (under Admin - Integration - Salesforce) will help performance. I'm not certain of this, but it seemed to help. Besides, it saves on API calls and storage space in SFDC.

Grant,I'd suggest you perform an audit on the fields syncing over from SFDC to Marketo. Support can help identify the fields that are syncing the most data. We had tons of SFDC fields that changed frequently (and therefore were hogging up space in the sync queue) and were vital to our enigneers, but...
