Newsletter clicks on logo

Hi there,

I had an issue with my newsletter report and saw this post https://nation.marketo.com/t5/product-discussions/high-number-of-link-clicks-to-first-link-in-newsle... which looked quite similar: a lot of clicks on our logo in the email sent out instead of other links with clear CTA buttons and text. Say the logo got way more clicks than any other link. Strange!

Here is what we are facing now:

  • The surge of logo clicks started on March, and went even more on Aprial newsletter. In March the logo didn't get the most clicks yet. The design/look of all the newsletters are the same, or very close at least.
  • The clicks of other links decreased too. I thought it was a miss tap on the logo linking to our homepage, and once people opened a wrong page they wouldn't come back. Yet 90% subscribers viewed it on desktop, less likely to miss click.
  • In this post https://nation.marketo.com/t5/product-discussions/newsletter-clicks-down-after-switch-from-mailchimp... the "email link scanners" seems something that love to click on the first link. But they shouldn't have affected performance of other links.
  • The "shared IP addresses of marketo servers" were probably OK coz the newsletter still has a 96%+ delivery rate. I don't think it was coz of a poor server that triggered the "email link scanners".

So, anybody help pls?

Thanks,

JC

Re: Newsletter clicks on logo

Well, not all email scanners click only on the first link (there are many that do, but not all click just on the very first link). Every email scanner out there has a different method of scanning emails, some sure do click the very first link but that doesn't mean the click activities you're seeing on rest of the links in your email are 100% from a real human, there's a fair chance that they could be from an email scanner too. Did you by any chance enable the filtering of email bot activities option from the Marketo Admin recently, if you did, that could be one possible explanation for the reduction of the click activities on emails?

There could also be a possibility that "link scanners are more trustworthy of your emails now and are not testing links as often." as Steven mentions in this post which may have resulted in drop in the email clicks in your emails recently.

Re: Newsletter clicks on logo

Hi Darshil,

Thanks for your reply! I turned the "Enable Bot Activity Identification" switch on. Let's see what is going to happen.

Re: Newsletter clicks on logo

Great, by turning on just the "Enable Bot Activity Identification", all the bot activities identified by Marketo will not be logged in the activity log (and hence you may see a drop in the open/click rates). It is only when you enable the toggle below that says "Log Bot Activity", the bot activities will be logged in the person activity logs in Marketo. The identified Bot activities will the have bot activity flag marked to True and you may also filter those activities in the SL using the constraint on the Click/Open email filters and triggers. You may refer this doc page on email bot activities.
