Creating a list for a one time email send

Hello,

I need to upload 2 lists for 2 emails, but want the lists to be only used for these 2 emails as a one-off and not added to my whole list in Marketo for any other email sends. How do I go about doing this?

You import people to a static list, send out the email, and later update the Marketing Suspended of all the people in list to True. With the Marketing Suspended field set to True, these people could still receive Operational emails sent from Marketo, if you don't want that, you can update Blocklisted field to True instead (although make sure you know the consequences of this, e.g., if anyone in the list signs up for a webinar, they'd not receive the operational registration confirmation email).

 

Alternatively, if you have a suppression smart list/segmentation, that all your email campaigns reference, then you can add a filter there so these people are in the suppression list. Lastly, between the time you're setting this up and updating their Marketing Suspended/Blocklisted to True post the email send, make sure to suppress these people from receiving other emails by including a Member of List not in "<List Name>" filter.

To put @Darshil_Shah1 's comment into perspective: When you add a person to a list you ALWAYS add them to the entire database. So in order for these people not to be available for other campaigns you do need to take action to actively prevent that. Short of removing them from the database after the email send (and therefore also losing your statistics on your email sent), the options Darshil provides are really effective ones.

A "softer" approach is possible if you have proper consent management dialed in. If you capture email opt-ins your standard target audience criteria should also contain some sort of filter for consent having been given. If you upload your list and none of these people have given consent, they will not meet your standard filters for this. But again, this depends on whether you actively manage consent.
