Anonymous web visitors sync to existing Salesforce/Marketo leads?

Hi,

We're trying to set up a campaign to incentivize customers to click a link on a Marketo landing page.  We'll initially be sending an email directly from the account manager to a known lead (not through Marketo).  If the email recipient forwards the email to a colleague, if the lead exists in Salesforce but does not yet have Marketo activity or munchkin ID, is there any way to sync back that landing page activity to Salesforce, or is it just anonymous?

Has anyone set up anything like this? The only solution I can think of is to create an intermediary form, which is likely to create a barrier that deters people from taking the desired action.

Thanks!

Your problem isn’t just restricted to forwards. Even the initial email recipient won’t be known to Marketo based on clicking a bare link with no other identifying information. If their Munchkin session is currently anonymous, clicking a link like https://www.example.com/some/page  (where everybody receives the same URL) won't change that.

It’s possible to construct a link to a Marketo LP using the Marketo Unique Code (i.e. a LP with pURLs, or personalized URLs, enabled), send such links via a 3rd-party mailer, and use JS on the LP to associate their session and in turn log the pageviews to Marketo. But of course you can’t switch the URL based on whether the email is forwarded or not — the forwarded recipient and the original recipient have the same link.

It seems overall like you’re seeking the impossible.

  • If a link doesn’t have identifying information, and the current Munchkin session is anonymous, then clicking the link doesn’t do anything special, just logs another anonymous hit.
  • If the link does have identifying information, then it can always be forwarded to someone other than the initial recipient. Yes, you can automatically associate an anonymous session with the person who originally received the email. But that applies to any anonymous session. You can’t tell the difference between Person A’s (the “right” person) anonymous session and Person B’s (“wrong”) anonymous session.  How could you?

Thanks for the explanation - that makes more sense to me now (I'm very new to Marketo).  I think our best option is to put a form on an intermediary page.

@rslms ,

that still doesn't really solve the problem.  Why not send the email from Marketo?  That way you get link tracking, munchkin association etc etc 'for free'.
