For some reason, this code didn't exist in two different Marketo instances prior to August 2019. Since that time, we've received thousands. Complicating the issue is a bounce management campaign, calling for all contacts with 3 soft bounces in 90 days to be marked email invalid. As a result of this ooo classification, we've been inadvertently marking contacts Email Invalid for 9 months. Very surprised that this is the only post about this issue, since that bounce management campaign was built from a popular community post - literally everyone who implemented it would have this issue. Granted, I've only looked in two instances but they are wholly unrelated - and have the same exact circumstances. If you're reading this.. see how many Email Bounce Soft Details contains auto-reply/vacation results you get for before August 1, 2019. Then look for after. Am I missing a data retention cutoff that removes those bounces? I've got countless other bounce codes from before August 1, 2019 so I really don't think that's it.

I contacted support last week when I had a massive sync backlog because of an update across all contact and account records. I asked that our sync bandwidth be temporarily increased and was told this wasn't possible. Interestingly, we merged two integrated Marketo-SFDC instances late last year and Marketo temporarily increased our sync bandwidth. When I informed support that the information they provided was inaccurate, I got my escalation. This is common in my experience. The first support response is either - "This isn't a Marketo problem." or "Here is a response that isn't accurate or won't actually help." Once an issue is escalated, my experience is totally different and much much more satisfying. Someone mentioned elsewhere that they feel as though they know more about Marketo than the first-responder support team. I feel the same way. I shouldn't have to educate support on what is and is not possible on this platform.

I never got there completely, but I travelled a bumpy road to improvement. Kept asking if things were approved, followed up with those who approved, really drilling down to find out where things were - and managing expectations. It helped that I explained just how long I spent going in and editing emails over and over and over. Seemed to resonate a bit.

Not necessarily. I believe it goes by the Last Modified field. New info my sync without an entry on the activity log.

The code of the email does not provide any obvious cues to explain this. Is there any way to provide this? Many of us here would be happy to have a look.

Marketo Support has always told me that the most recently updated record will be selected. I have never really bought this explanation, but I've heard it many, many times.

I spent years as the sole Marketo force at a private equity firm. The process I developed worked well for my situation. It placed responsibility for all approvals and compliance checks on the content creator. I wouldn't create an email or send a proof until I received finalized copy. Surely this didn't stop changes after I received copy, but it got compliance and stakeholder approvals out of the way for the most part - and took that responsibility off my plate. If you are the content creator as well the Marketo user, I'd recommend drafting copy and gaining all approvals before you even create the email in Marketo. That way you don't need to make a bunch of small adjustments to your assets. Hope that helps!

Territories are traditionally under the jurisdiction of the mother nation and thus GDPR would apply to all territories. In cases where there might be some gray area, I'd always err on the side of GDPR - I've found it best to apply the stricter rules to everyone rather than use more slack rules in some cases. Will also help when most nations inevitably adopt some form of GDPR legislation.

Hi Matilda Miglio - Thanks for your input on this, I appreciate. While countless others who search this in the future will 100% find these steps helpful, I'm more curious about impact. Did you notice that this exercise sped up your Marketo-SFDC sync? Do you happen to have data on fields before/after and average sync speed before/after? Thanks for your help!

We are merging two Marketo and Salesforce instances, and will have very long sync times since our total database is over a million contacts. Sync times are already increasing, so I've begun looking into ways we might clean up the newly merged instance post-merge. We have almost 1,000 fields. If I hide many of these, will it speed up sync? Does Marketo still sync the data even though the field is hidden? There are some great resources on instance clean up and speeding up sync but I haven't found an answer to this question. I believe this is due in part to the Marketo sending domains having a consistent identifiable string (mkto) that is picked up by many enterprise email filters. I'm not sure that this can be avoided or otherwise manipulated, but I'd also be very interested in finding out.

Late to the party, but this is a great question. Further, I'm interested to know if SaveD Rule or Saved Flow Steps we create are preserved once Marketo offers the full switch to Sky. I'd hate to get a jump on building this out only to have Rules and Steps wiped clean down the road.

Would there be a benefit in creating a data management campaign to mark all Unsubscribed or Email Invalid as Black Listed? Despite searching the community quite a bit, I was unable to find an answer to this question. My thought is that Black Listed=True would lower our list size pre-send, giving a more realistic view of audience size but this aim may be achieved through Email Invalid or Unsubscribe? Thanks for your help!
