Each of us have had many different experiences that has led us to where we are today in our careers. Share your experience that has led you to your current position in marketing!
Were you a teacher previously? Maybe worked in hospitality like myself? Engineering to marketing?
I was introduced to marketing in high school by a marketer turned teacher (she worked at Computer Associates) and really never looked back. It was love at first sight. Studied Marketing in college, and worked in various industries in the marketing department.
I first learned about Marketing in high school and I found it as the most interesting part of the "Economy" subject. My previous job was in business administration (and doing marketing for a small company) whereas now I work full time in Marketing (at CA Technologies) and it is a great experience.
I started out in politics! Worked for a Congressman and decided I hated it. Then I got into marketing the very first brand new Golden Dollar Coin, that was many many years ago. It's been marketing in one aspect or another ever since.
I started out working toward being a veterinarian, then I was interested in Genetics, and was a Lab Manager for years prior to moving into sales/marketing and now marketing.
I got an undergraduate degree in Psychology & decided I did not want to go that route after college. So my first job ended up being in Finance as a Procurement Specialist. After a while as I was getting my MA in Organization Management, a position opened up in Marketing that I decided would offer better career growth & be a better fit, so I decided to move in that direction. Ever since then (9 years later), I've been dedicated to Marketing and growing my career in every shape & form. Which takes me to my current Community Manager position now after my previously held Demand Generation Manager position - you can never stop learning and gaining experience in different areas of marketing. Focusing on the customer and customer journey has enabled me to come full circle in the entire Marketing landscape...AND allowed me to focus on all areas of Marketing so in the future, I can go anywhere I please (Demand Gen, International Marketing, Marketing Operations, Customer Marketing), etc. In the end, my Psychology degree came in handy for my Marketing positions after all!
I got my degree in Information systems and my first job was with an application hosting company that needed help with SEO/SEM. I got into digital marketing by pure luck and loved it.
Much like Crystal, I got my undergrad degree in psychology and sociology, but I didn't want to go that route. I managed several retail stores and was a buyer of educational materials until I decided I wanted something with a more consistent schedule than a retail store, and I joined a small data quality company where I was the "do everything-er". I was supposed to start in account management, but I was quickly involved with sales, accounts, and also their marketing. I preferred the marketing side of things, and quickly excelled in that area. After becoming an MCE I shifted to a company where I was only responsible for marketing -- and primarily in Marketo. Today I manage all of our marketing operations and technology, and love it!
Awesome Dory!
I graduated with a Mathematics degree and knew that I didn't want to go to grad school or go back and get my teaching certificate. Luckily, I landed a job almost one month out of school as a Marketing Analytics Specialist and learned about these tools called Salesforce and Marketo that I had never heard of before . Fast-forward three years later I am now a MCE, Champion and working towards my SFDC Admin certification as well.
