We created a custom salesforce Account object field and it is not showing up in my Marketo instance? Any ideas why and how to rectify this?

Are there read/write visibility permissions for the Marketo Integration User? Ask your SFDC Admin to make sure the field is exposed to the integration user.
Have you refreshed your schema? We have found sometimes to see a new SFDC field, you have to pause the sync, refresh the schema under Admin Salesforce object sync and then turn the sync back on. Make sure you turn the sync back on once these steps are completed if you have to go that way.
