Social Media Referred Leads

Hey there!

I have three report related questions that are all a bit intertwined:

1. I need to run reports on how many website hits we are getting from social media, does anyone have any suggestions for how to do this?

Right now I have a report in Analytics that's Smart List looks like this:

Original Referrer, contains, twitter, linkedin, facebook
-OR-
Original Referrer, contains, t.co (I use bitly links for all social media posts and those come through in Marketo under HTTP Referrer as t.co/a bunch of letters and numbers)

I know this isn't perfect, and I know no Marketo report is going to give me perfect numbers for this, but I'm wondering if anyone has a better way to run reports to try to capture this statistic.

2. I also need to run reports on where leads are entering the website for the first time. Namely, how many leads are entering on our Blog page. When I look in my Web activity reports, I can see an "Entry Page' field, but it seems I can't use that as a filter in my reports. Am I missing something?

3. Can I use HTTP Referrer as a report filter? I'm not seeing it. Is there any way to make a report based on this field?

1. We use a similar method, but include a few more referring social sites from which we get a fair amount of traffic per Google Analytics in the argument and use the "Starts with" rather than the "Contains" operator.  We then set the Lead Source field value to "Social Media" when the anonymous lead is initially created or on the first form submission that creates the lead.  This prevents the Lead Source of a lead that was created via a list import or via SFDC that initially has no value in the Original Referrer field from erroneously being attributed to social media when they are come to our site via social media and the Original Referrer field is updated.

2. We use Google Analytics to get an analyis of the entry pages.

3. You can use the Original Referrer filter or the Lead Source in the smart list of some of the reports.

I agree with Elliott that using Google Analytics really helps with some of the more in-depth social reporting, specifically thanks to the use of campaign codes in the tracking links.  Whenever I place a link on a social media channel, I make sure to tag it using the Google URL Generator:

Then I can filter (both in Marketo and GA) not only by source, but also by which link was clicked.
