Setting an Email/Minute Rate for large sends

Let's say I want to send the same email to one million people. I don't want to send it to all of them at once as that could cause my IP to get flagged as sending spam. I also really don't want to set up a handful of campaigns with different smart lists every time I want to message this group.

At another job, our email sending platform allowed me to set a rule on a campaign like, "send this email to 5000 customers/minute." Is there anything like that in Marketo? I can't find anything that allows me to control the rate at which messages are sent out. Again, I'm really looking for a solution other than "set up the same campaign 5 times with a different smart list attached to each one."

No, there are no user-accessible rate limit options for a single send.

Try random sample action to split the audiences and send email with wait step.

That won’t work with these numbers, which is why I didn’t bother suggesting it.

a) You can’t use random sample to split a million leads into blocks of 5000

b) You’ll never get the granularity of 5000 emails queued per minute using wait steps

Re: Setting an Email/Minute Rate for large sends

What is the count per send you have in mind? Are you using a shared IP?

There are ways to control the message flow in Marketo but it depends on the nature of the campaign you plan to launch. If you don't want to send it all in one go, what is the send cadence you plan to follow?
