Problems on Outlook 13 with Marketo Responsive Design Templates

Has anyone else had problems with the "responsive design" Marketo templates from templates.marketo.com breaking on Outlook 13?

The layout for Flower Power falls apart when forwarded. 😞

And I've had problems with others....expanding type size and broken tables.

Re: Problems on Outlook 13 with Marketo Responsive Design Templates

Hello Carey,

Designing a Responsive Email  is a tricky task and there are many factors which you need to keep in mind before starting.

My personal experiance is that always try to built templates from the scratch so that you have full control over it, It makes debugging a lot easier.

it can often be difficult If you are trying to make changes to an imported a template because sometimes these changes can break the responsiveness.

Can you please tell me which template you are using and what are the problems you facing ?

Best Regards,

Hi Carey,

Yes, we have also been having issues with them. It's not cool! Especially the ones with the side bars, they completely vanish from the top and go to the bottom. It's ugly! Hopefully my designer can figure a fix out for us and Marketo will fix for all!

Outlook 2013 is proving to be a BEAST when it comes to responsive...it's a step backward from even previous Outlook versions.

I wouldn't wait on Marketo to come up with a fix; they've got bigger fish to fry. You should hire a designer with skills in responsive email design, or at least have one available when you need a fix like this.

Re: Problems on Outlook 13 with Marketo Responsive Design Templates

Really the main issue is the way Outlook renders HTML via the Microsoft Word engine...these two articles may help:

http://www.emailonacid.com/blog/details/tips_and_tricks_outlook_07-13/

http://www.emailonacid.com/blog/details/C13/removing_unwanted_spacing_or_gaps_between_tables_in_outlook_2007_2010

If your audience are primarily Outlook users (as most businesses still sadly are), I find it's often a delicate balance between getting the best result on Outlook clients without sacrificing too much for other clients...and without spending too much time trying to identify the issues πŸ™‚

But if you or someone on your team is familiar with HTML/CSS, take a look at those two articles β€” sounds like it may be an issue with that template using "Left" and "Right" align tags for multiple tables, which the second article provides a work-around for.  Hope that helps!

Yes, unfortunately responsive is quite a beast, and Marketo doesn't seem to have made many strides forward in making it easy for us to have responsive templates that are supported.

As others have said, a designer who is very knowledgeable in responsive design is most likely going to be your best bet.

Re: Problems on Outlook 13 with Marketo Responsive Design Templates

Hello Alok-

Specifically the Flower Power template breaks (and including the new version sent by Grazetti this morning) when it is forwarded from Outlook 10 to Outlook 13 (the rt-hand column totally falls apart and appears pushed 2/3ds down the page. It ALSO breaks when forwarded from Outlook 13 to Outlook 10 --- the rt-hand column compresses into a very odd looking narrow center column and the space between the columns becomes inordinately large. Is there anything Grazetti can do to resolve this???
