Preventing Marketo from seeing certain SFDC records based on custom pick list values

UPDATE:

I went ahead and created a program that filters on Contacts that have the pick list values we want Marketo to market to, which by default should exclude the ones we don't. Because it's based on filters, it has to be scheduled, which I've set it to do every week day.

My new question is: will this program apply to all leads regardless of other programs set up? We do not have any programs set up to see values other than those that are in this new program.

And my older question still stands: will this affect what Marketo sees going forward? If all goes well, our Lead count will be 98,658 instead of over 100K, which, for what should be obvious reasons, is the goal. Thanks.

Original message:
I was initially instructed to set up sharing rules in Salesforce to prevent Marketo from seeing certain records in Salesforce, but it isn't working, and it's most likely because sharing rules grant wider access, they doesn't restrict access.

I saw in another older post to set up a
SFDC sync smart campaign, which sounds like a good idea. I just want to make sure I don't prevent Marketo from seeing records of contacts with certain values in custom pick lists that want it to see. My goal is to make sure Marketo doesn't see records with the other values, but currently it sees everything.

What's the best way to create a program that will do this while not preventing Marketo from seeing what we want it to see. Also, if I set this up now, will it stop Marketo from seeing records with excluded values going forward even if it can see them today?

Thanks,

Re: Preventing Marketo from seeing certain SFDC records based on custom pick list values

The sharing rules in SFDC and inconjuction with the Marketo Sync user is the best way to prevent certain records being synced to the Marketo user. If you dont wnat that data in Marketo in the first place that is best practice. Sound like your rules in SFDC need reviewing as this should work. When using a rule in SFDC, some use a custom field to listen when Marketo is syncing a new lead does it have this x check box field ticked yes/no accept recored or reject.

II think the hidding of records is based on the record type and not already capture field data. Please confirm with you SFDC admin if its possible.

There is a free on demand webinar in the Learning center regarding hiding records from Marketo in SFDC.

Re: Preventing Marketo from seeing certain SFDC records based on custom pick list values

What I had to do was change the organization wide default settings in Salesforce to private for both Contacts and Leads, then grant everyone access except Marketo. Then the sharing rules I created for Marketo worked correctly. This is how everyone should do it, if they're trying to do the same thing. There's no way around it. Thanks.
