Marketo and Salesforce Duplicates Issue

Hi there,

We are having an issue with our admin database and salesforce creating duplicate leads in Marketo. SFDC type is blank for leads coming from our admin database and SFDC type is contact coming from salesforce. Has anyone had this issue and/or figured out a fix?

Hi Allison,

Any new record in Salesforce that Marketo sees will be synced down as a new record in Marketo, regardless of whether or not another record with that email address already exists in Marketo. You may want to consider just connecting your admin database to Salesforce, and then letting that information sync to Marketo from Salesforce, rather than trying to update Marketo via the admin database directly as well.


In addition, it could be that the API calls your local database is making to Marketo aren't set to deduplicate properly. That all depends on which API and which call is being used though.

The desired state would be that only the leads we want in salesforce are the ones that are there, not our entire database.

We think that if we can change the lead attribute SFDC Type to be editable, we can create a smart campaign that updates the blank field to the correct field, getting rid of the duplicates, like this:

However, the SFDC type shown in the flow step is the company attribute and the lead attribute isn't available to update.

Any ideas?

Yes, Marketo Only leads are denoted by SFDC Type=NULL or IS EMPTY. This is normal for all leads not already synced to SFDC.

As Grant suggests, you can setup a flow where the Admin > SFDC > Marketo.

This setup requires you to install a deduping tool like RingLead or something else to merge the Admin Leads to the correct SFDC Record by Email (or whatever).  The flow from Admin > SFDC would require some rules about which records get pushed, so that's something your database admin and SFDC Admin can setup.

Alternatively, you can push all Marketo Leads to SFDC and it will assign an SFDC Type. This is NOT editable because it is a system field updated by SFDC/Marketo sync. Do not mess with it.

You will still need a deduper regardless of the data flow.
