Implications of renaming/deleting/merging lead source values in SFDC and Marketo?

Greetings All!

We are revisiting our lead sources in SFDC and i wanted to understand the implications those changes will have in Marketo.

For example: If I rename a lead source value, what needs to be done in Marketo to make sure no data is lost and the revision is implemented.

Same if I delete a lead source value or merge two values, what things need to be kept in mind before implementing any of these?

Will have to make changes to all the forms, smart lists that are using those lead sources values that may be undergoing change?

What would be the best way of implementing this across Marketo and SFDC?

Thanks!
Khushboo

You need to make a table mapping the values.

Value 1 = > New Value1
Value 2  => New Value 1

There isn't an implication except for your reports. Be careful as you do this using Change Data Value.

Be sure to then fix the values in the SFDC picklist. You can often do half the work there because changing a Picklist value will ask you to map it to something new...assuming you have a new value added.

1. Add new values to Lead Source in SFDC
2. Delete old values and map to new ones in SFDC
3. Run clean up in Marketo using CHange Data Value.

Josh makes a great point here, update what you can in Salesforce.

Changes to the picklist values in Salesforce will be picked up by Marketo. The admin will receive an automated email noting the change and any landing pages with that form will move into approved with draft status, according to this article: https://community.marketo.com/MarketoArticle?id=kA050000000KzdqCAC. It was last modified in 2011, so forms 2.0 weren't around. Your forms may move to approved with draft and once approved, your landing pages will do the same.

Hope this helps!

Data cleaning for lead sources can definately be a little tricky for lead source updates. Like Josh said, make sure to adjust the picklists in SF or you'll be fixing them again later.

In terms of historical data, it can be as simple as complex as you want.
--Simple: A Change Data Value campaign like, "If Lead Source = List Vendor, change Lead Source to Online Advertising."
--Complex: A multi-rule campaign that uses historical data to update Lead Source---"If acquision program is XYZ, then Lead Source = ABC, if form filled out = X, the lead source = Y"

In terms of impact, there shouldn't be much except for reporting implications. The exception would be if you had certain Marketo campaigns trigger based off of Lead Source. For example, if a lead was created with a Lead Source of Webinar, increase lead score +25.

I recently wrote up a who bunch of thoughts on Lead Source Management that expands the single Lead Source field to 8 fields. Hopefully this might help your thought process. Feel free to ask me any questions.
