Client does not want the extra URL text.
Then I hope they also do not want tracking.
Without a technical or compliance barrier, it's very rare to care about this param.
Agreed, we told them that this will disable tracking. They won't care until two weeks from now when they ask us why we do not have tracking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Just a little note here: if they're that hung up about parameters, you can always do a reverse proxy to hide parameters via full URL rewrites. Had a client that wanted to do this insanity so they could hide their tracking data. Is it 1000% extraneous? Yes. Can it be done? Technically, yes, but it's in everyone's interest to strongly dissuade people from going down this route.
The mkt_tok still has to appear in the URL in some form. If you use an intermediate redirect to strip the parameters before the page is viewed (i.e. before Munchkin loads) tracking will still fail.
