How to manage gated access to content in Marketo

A couple of Qs I need help with:

  1. Is the process for enabling gated download and gated video viewing the same?  If not how are they different
  2. Video viewing tracking – what does Marketo enable both for gated videos and ungated videos.  I know Marketo supports some tracking of YouTube  video views, but I don’t remember what information it tracks
    • Who viewed?
    • # of views?
    • Devices viewed on?
    • Shared?
    • Who shared?
    • View complete file?
  3. What is their best practice recommendation on where to host the video content, and does the reporting differ based on where you host it?  I’m evaluating the following:
    • On market
    • On our own web server
    • On YouTube or equivalent
    • On Box or equivalent
The reason behind my questions is that I’m trying to find a new platform for hosting content for our reps and also control view access of videos.  YouTube gives me only 3 options
  • Public – findable with search
  • Public – not listed but accessible if you have the URL
  • Private w/password
The challenge with that is if someone has a private URL, we can’t control if they share it and therefore can’t really control who views the video.  So… this doesn’t work for sharing competitive sensitive content with our reps, or for truly gated content.

  1. Yes. You just create a LP and Form and the Confirmation page with the content.
  2. There are various ways to track the videos. I'd check the Marketo docs:

3. If you want to prevent random people from finding your video, you need to gate it. Yes, the YT private link is vulnerable, but I doubt most competitors will spend the time to figure it out.  But also they could just fool your form anyway. You should look at Vimeo or consider passwording the content on your web server.
