How is anonymous IP collected?

Is this data only gathered when a lead anonymously visits a munchkin'd webpage? Or could this be collected by email engagement?

I'm trying to determine potential IP blocks, and this data would be valuable to see, for example, if 8 people hard bounced from the same company might be based in the same office.

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

Hi Kim,

It is collected by the munchkin API and is the IP address of the company's gateway, not the individual computers.

It has nothing to do with email delivery.

A while ago, when we could access the anonymous lead, most of them had an anonymous IP and most of the web personalisation solutions that work on anonymous leads work from the IPs.

I do not think that even the presence or not of the SSL protocol on your LP's has an impact, but Sanford Whiteman will be able to confirm this.

Nope, SSL is not related. Only comes into play with referrers.

Only thing I'd add to your points is it could just as well be the IP of the lead's cell carrier as their corporate gateway.

Yep, I had forgotten the mobile devices

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

Hi, we are just trying to print out the anonymousIP and inferredCompany/company fields and nothing prints out. It only works when someone fills out a form or already has a cookie. What do we have to do to get that field?

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

You can't have that information until Munchkin has seen the lead first, by definition. Having someone's email address doesn't give you their (or one of their) IP address(es).

Is a form submission necessary? Isn't anonymousIP what you have when the user is not a lead?

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

So when you say "print out" exactly what do you mean? You can't use a {{lead.token}} on the first hit from a new lead. If you just want to see the current public IP, call an API like I do here: http://blog.teknkl.com/conditionally-load-munchkin-based-on-ip-ranges/

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

By print out, I mean I was just testing if those values are available-before doing anything with them.

So here is what my higher-ups are asking: can we target anonymous and competitor users with personalized content? For competitors could we create people in Marketo's DB with IP ranges and company information and have that content show when they visit? Similarly, could we target anonymous users with only their IP/range (gateway?)?

Re: How is anonymous IP collected?

By print out, I mean I was just testing if those values are available-before doing anything with them.

Those values are stored for anonymous leads, of course -- typically those values are initialized when the lead is still anonymous. And such leads are, broadly speaking, "in Marketo's DB," but they are not not capital-L Leads (or capital-P People, depending on your Marketo version).

But that's neither here nor there. The issue is that anonymous lead records in general are not designed to be used with standard dynamic content. Marketo -- in opposition to Google Analytics -- is overwhelmingly geared toward working with associated web sessions.

For example, you can segment content blocks on Marketo-hosted Landing Pages according to where the lead is found in multiple segmentations. This only works if the web session is currently associated with a named lead.  Anonymous leads aren't segmented so they don't apply. Similarly, you can personalize content by directly inserting {{lead.tokens}}. This, too, only works if the Marketo server already "knows" what lead is requesting the page.

So what you're describing cannot work with the standard Marketo MA application.

It can, however, be built with Web Personalization (formerly Real-Time Personalization) from Marketo or with a 3rd-party application. If you already have some kind of personalization engine I would assume they'd be able to manage content based on IP addresses, since that's the easiest possible data to get ahold of in a totes anonymous session. But you'd have to ask them. If they haven't built this capability into their product, you aren't going to be able to help them with a typical Marketo setup.
