Please do not do this in Marketo. Use SFDC or a tool like LeanData to manage conversions to avoid duplicates, etc. And you will have more control over how it does the conversion.

Agreed with Josh, the lack of flexibility and intelligence of this feature makes it useless. Not only duplicates are not managed, but record types are not either.
