I've tried to trigger off a change in Company Name. It works for non-Salesforce contacts.
For account name changes from Salesforce, how do I catch those? There doesn't seem to be an activity written in Marketo when the update happens in Salesforce so it doesn't detect it had occurred.

When SDFC lead becomes a contact, some of his fields become contact fields and some become account fields.
You should check your field mapping in Marketo and see if the Company field is map with the right field in SFDC.
