We are in the process of deploying Marketo. Can you suggest all the best practices and suggested fields that should be included as hidden fields on a form. For example, for a "See a Demo" form, we want to make sure we know the lead source, referrer, lead source detailed, ppc campaign that drove the conversion, etc.
Thanks.
Hi Ron,
Here's what I've used in the past:
We created fields for everything we wanted to log and then pulled it from either the referrer or the URL.
This will really depend on what you're passing on and what you want to measure.
If you are attempting to gather Referrer Parameters, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you use SSL on your landing page (i.e. upload the cert to Marketo and the $ to install it).
Hi Sanford Whiteman,
Can you please elaborate on this and explain why is SSL required here ?
Thx in advance,
-Greg
Because if the referrer is running SSL -- and with "SSL Everywhere" policies this is increasingly likely -- and you're not, you won't see the referrer. Ever.
Thx
What if I use SSL and the referrer does not ?
-Greg
That direction is fine.
Thanks for this insight, Sanford. This explains why many of the referral values are "no referral" for us. While we use SSL on our Marketo LPs, our website pages do not (yet).
Yep, commonly overlooked issue. I think SSL on LPs (though in your case it's the other way around) has to stop being a nice-to-have and become a mandate. Maybe then Marketo will lower the setup cost, too.
