Best practices for sending trigger campaigns

I'm interested in seeing if there are any best practices or recommendations on when to send out a trigger email campaign (in particular for industry, audience segment etc).

Right now, I launch the first email and send out a trigger email based on activity after a certain amount of days (3-5, 5-7 since it depnds on our audience segment). 

How many days do you wait to send out a trigger email? Is there any guidance/recommendations on this? I want to know if I'm in range or if I need to adjust.

If the person would expect an immediate response, then immediately.

If not, then I'd wait 3-5 days before the first email and about a week between emails.
