In an effort to clean up our lead database, I am cleaning out old smart lists. I am new to this particular instance, so I don't want to delete lists that may be referenced by other team members. I am however archiving old smart lists that aren't being used by anything in Marketing Activities and that were created/updated over a year ago.
My question: Will archiving smart lists give me the same database improvement (overall speed of system increase) as deleting smart lists?

A smart list only runs when you click Leads or when you call it from a Campaign/Report.
So you can archive it with no impact to the system.
Archiving the lists will prevent them from appearing in search results, but to Josh's point, as far as overall system performance goes you won't see a boost.
Archiving old programs and deactivating unused trigger campaigns will however help with performance. For some other tips I find this a helpful read:
