Creating compelling, responsive emails has always been a balance between creativity and technical constraints. With the introduction of the new Drag-and-Drop Email Editor, that balance is shifting for the better - though there's still room to grow. After spending some time with the editor, here are my thoughts on what it gets right and where improvements are still needed.
What’s Working Well
1. User-Friendly Design
One of the standout features of the new editor is how intuitive it is. You don’t need to be a seasoned designer or a developer to create beautiful emails. The drag-and-drop functionality is smooth and easy to grasp, even for beginners.
2. Quick Template Creation
In marketing, speed matters - and this editor delivers. You can build a fully functional email template in under an hour, making it a big boost for productivity.
3. AI Assistance for Content and Design
The built-in AI assistant is a great addition. Whether you're looking to polish your messaging or refine your design, the AI can offer real-time suggestions that save time and enhance quality.
4. Reusable Content with Fragments
The editor supports “fragments,” which are reusable content blocks that can be dropped into any template. This feature significantly reduces redundancy and ensures consistency across campaigns.
5. HTML Import Support
Already have custom designs or coded layouts? No problem. The editor lets you import HTML directly, making it easy to blend no-code tools with traditional development workflows - a great fit for flexible teams.
6. Link Review Before Send
Before hitting send, the editor allows you to review all the links in your email—an essential step to prevent broken links and ensure a smooth user experience.
7. Email Designer Integration Across Programs
No matter where you're working within the platform, the email designer is accessible. This cross-functional support helps maintain continuity and reduces context-switching. It is accessible in all programs (Default, Email, Event, Nurture)
What Could Be Improved
1. Limited Layout Complexity
While the editor handles standard layouts well, it struggles with more complex structures—such as combining a 2-column and 1-column layout over a single background image.
2. No Dynamic Content in Fragments or Main Editor
Dynamic content is essential for personalized email marketing, and its absence in both fragments and the core editor limits flexibility for marketers aiming to tailor content to specific audiences.
3. HTML Template Import Limitations
Importing existing templates can sometimes result in layout inconsistencies, especially when complex features or custom structures are involved.
4. Fixed Column Widths
Currently, there’s no way to adjust column widths when dragging and dropping sections. This can be frustrating when trying to fine-tune layouts.
5. No Custom CSS Support
For advanced users looking to push the design envelope, the inability to add custom CSS is a significant drawback.
6. Fragments Are Not Editable at Email Level
Once a fragment is added to an email, there's no way to customize it within that specific instance. This limits flexibility when slight adjustments are needed for specific campaigns.
Final Thoughts
The new Drag-and-Drop Email Editor offers a lot of value, especially for teams looking to move fast without sacrificing quality. With a bit more flexibility around dynamic content, complex layouts, and customization, it has the potential to become a best-in-class tool for email creation.
If you’re already using it, the productivity gains are hard to ignore but like any good tool, it will benefit from continued evolution.
