There is one interesting feature that was released with the email editor v2.0: save email as template. It will enable to select only a few modules from a longer template and will enable you to create a custom template from it. This is great in conjunction with the starter templates.
Yet, a lot still has to be done in the html code in order to reduce the possibilities for the end user. This idea is to make it easier:
When doing so, the web designer user should be able to review the variable values and decide whether or not they should be left modifiable in the resulting template or locked down to the value set by the designer. Typical variables that would be locked down:
