Are you a new Marketo user who inherited an existing Marketo instance? Help us improve this experience by answering the following question: What were the two or three (or more?) things you needed help with right away when you came on-board?
I wasn't a new user but when I inherited a new instance one of the most important things to understand was how they typically structured their programs (so that I could come up with the next steps to improving on those), which channels/tags were being used and what wasn't really being used, and an outline of the SFDC fields that were used and their purposes.
If I had to pick just one thing, SFDC fields would be the most important to have outlined since there was a ton of garbage that hadn't been hidden/unsynced and I needed to know how the fields were used in order to properly segment the database and target the correct people.
Thanks Dory - I've definitely heard that program structure and cleanliness of database are top issues that need to be grappled with, so it's great to get confirmation of that.
It's pretty terrible.
You have no idea whats connected to what. Here are just a few I've encountered:
What would help (some of these are available):
Thanks for the list of things you've encountered, Dan. I'm definitely seeing a theme related to understanding how things were set up in general and untangling things that have gone awry. The list of things that would help is terrific, and we're looking at ways to provide this kind of assistance.
It would also be great for a Marketo Admin to be able to add some documentation INside Marketo. For example, building a mini documentation area that just describes how things are set up and how to continue running things.
I had to hand over the keys to Marketo once when I switched jobs, and had to spend a few days training up the replacement. It would be nice to say - its all documented in there, you'll find it 🙂
Love the idea of documenting the instance - sort of like having the 'original packing slip' you get when you buy a new product or the maintenance history for a car....
I was a brand new user who inherited from a Marketo expert (she taught me a lot over a short period of time). There were other users who weren't quite experts who had used the instance prior to both me and her, so it was a bit of a mess that I'm still cleaning up.
The biggest hurdles I faced when I became the owner of our Marketo instance was:
Thanks Christa - Bingo! Your three bullet points are all things we've been working on helping new users figure out. Thanks for confirming our suspicions with those great examples.
The best way to approach this question is to work backwards from reporting. Decide what reporting exists or that you need and work your way backwards ..
Channels --> Tags --> Programs --> Emails/Landing Pages/ Forms --> Website/CRM/Data warehouse/ List Imports ---> Any other data sources. By going through this process you will quickly realize what is missing and what exists, and then anything that doesn't fit into here you investigate.
I hope that helps!
Thanks,
M
