As far as I can tell, email objects have no use because you cant pull them into programs.

Yeah, if you want them to be part of a program, right-click on the email in the design studio and select move. That'll allow you to move it elsewhere in the design studio or into marketing activities under a program.

Or if you want to use an email in more than one program, you would simply include the "send email" flow step within a smart campaign of a program to select the email that resides in Design Studio.  We have all of our operational emails in Design Studio (e.g., contact-us confirmation emails, marketing/sales alerts when MQLs are achieved, etc.).  Same with our email templates.  But campaign emails are typically created as a local asset (based on an email template) within the program itself.

Emails designed in the design studio? I havent seen anyway to make them apart of any program email, default, or otherwise.

Email templates are exactly what they sound like: templates that define headers, footers, editable sections, etc. Emails in Marketo are (typically) built on those templates and are the final objects that are sent out in email campaigns. Emails can absolutely be used in programs.
