Utilizing SFDC Campaigns in Marketo?

My company implemented Marketo a week ago. In the past, we have tracked marketing assets and webinars using SFDC Campaigns. Does anyone have any best practices for utilizing SFDC Campaigns in Marketo? Did you find it no longer made sense to use SFDC Campaigns?

We try our best to not use SFDC campaign flow steps in Marketo as each step uses 1 API call per lead. If you have a large database, this can cause problems. However, we do use the "Salesforce Campaign Sync" feature on the Marketo program that does the sync during the bi-directional sync session instead of instantaneously by the flow step. 

Depending on your use case, it could still make sense to use SFDC campaigns for reporting purposes in salesforce. Otherwise, you dont need to if you do all your campaign tracking in Marketo. Sometimes sales reps like to look at all the campaigns that lead has been in as well, but you can also use marketo sales insight and interesting moments instead.

I highly recommend using SFDC Campaigns in the way Elaine describes in the first paragraph. You do have to be careful because Marketo will sync ANY lead over like that and try to send it to Sales. Usually I get around this by having SFDC assign new leads to a Queue and only send leads to Sales when they become MQL.

I agree. I wouldn't stop using SFDC campaigns. Sales can't see your programs.

Another bonus with SFDC Campaigns is that they're one of the only places you can see Leads and Contacts in the same place. Otherwise, they're always in separate reports!

Thanks for your responses! Very helpful. Can sales view the same information from Marketo sales insight and interesting moments as they can with SFDC Campaigns?
