What is the impact of merging and deleting tags associated to campaigns in both Marketo and SFDC?

Program Tags - only Hide them. Do not delete or edit after they are in use.
SFDC Campaign - not sure what you are planning here.
we have have a number of tags attached to programs and synced to SFDC we're looking to consolidate. So for example...
Channel Tag / Proposed Action
Email / Rename to "Email Batch"
Email 3rd Party / Merge into Email - Multi-touch, new "Email"
Email - Multi-touch / Rename to "Email"
Just not sure if I should go head and delete the old tags, what happens if I rename tags, how do it impact (if at all SFDC) campaign members, etc.
I've never dealt with tags, so I'm on a learning curve here.
