Suppressing a percentage of qualified leads from a trigger campaign

I want to run a trigger campaign but suppress a percentage of the population that otherwise would qualify from entering the campaign. What is the best way to go about doing this?

It will be a series of campaigns, but I assume after the first campaign it will be simple to suppress those who didn't initially go into the flow because the they won't request the second stage of the campaign and so forth.

What you can do is use a random sample in the "request campaign" flow step which will request the campaign you want. This will allow only a certain percentage of those leads that would have qualified for the campaign to actually run through.

Trigger: Campaign is requested

Flow: Request Campaign

     If random sample if 50 percent

     Default: do nothing

Can I do this even for the first stage of the campaign? Would they request the campaign in the smart list flow?

You're going to have 2 smart campaigns, the first is simply going to request the second campaign:

SC #1:

smart list: whichever criteria you need to select the necessary leads

Flow: Request Campaign: SC #2

     If random sample if 50 percent

     Default: do nothing

SC#2

trigger: campaign was requested: marketo flow action

flow: whichever actions need to take place

This ensures that whoever would have normally qualified for the trigger in SC #2, now only a random 50 percent will qualify.

Thanks for your help, great tips! This is for an email campaign, which I want 50% of leads that would qualify not to get. Would I be able to produce the same results by just running 1 smart campaign and telling marketo in the flow if random sample is 50 do nothing - default send email?

Correct, you can have the smart list of the smart campaign qualify all leads and the flow can be to simply only send the email to 50% of them. Make a note that those that don't get the email, will still be considered a member of the smart campaign since they qualified for the smart list.
