"empty" field in lead source reporting

When drilling down into reports by lead source, most recent lead source, and lead source detail, what does it mean if the field is "empty"? Does that just mean the hidden parameters weren't set up on the form yet?

It may also mean that the fields were never stamped in SFDC.
