Original lead source tracking

We've just moved into Marketo and am wondering what the best way to track original lead source. In the past the lead source field has been overwritten but I'd like to track original lead source or at least start looking at setting up attribution models.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? I was thinking of setting up a customer field in SFDC called "original lead source" and then writing to the field in SFDC only if it's blank.

That's the best way. Block field updates to that field and it will only populate when it's blank. 

Or...you can do "Latest Lead Source" which changes, and have a smart campaign that triggers if Lead Source is blank, fill with {{lead.Latest Lead Source}} via Change Data Value step.

We have "Original Lead Source" and "Latest Lead Source". And of course "Lead Source" and "Sub Source". We also only populate "Original Lead Source" when it's empty. And I know other that follow Jason's sugestion too. Probably the best way to go.
