No Unsubscribed Cause

I am wondering what the possibilities are for leads that are "true" for 'Unsubscribed' but are empty for 'Unsubscribed Cause'? I am familiar with the 'durable' unsubscribe functionality but I would still think something would fill in my 'Unsubscribed Cause' field.
