So, in what can only be considered classic Marketo form at this point they have "updated" the email editor with such a broken pile of garbage that a considerable amount of additional time is necessary to fix and author emails now. The WYSIWIG editor is anything but and forces all sorts of extranneous and unwanted HTML at every turn. This is HUGELY disappointing that they would see fit to put out a feature that is clearly nowhere near production ready. We spend a lot of money on this service and expect better.
Here's a few issues that are bugging me, please feel free and add yours to the comments below, or just tell me that I'm nuts and that it's a wonderful editor...
Accessing HTML is a secondary menu
Bulletted lists create a formatting nightmare that can only be fixed by manually entering the HTML code
A white background is forced on colored text that can only be manually removed in HTML as well.
Can no longer edit the style of links without manually coding in HTML, or by clunkily using the editore which adds span tags and extranneous code
Advanced Image & Table style/properties are gone, have to manually code in HTML
Side-by-side html vs. text editor was intuitive and useful. It's gone.
VERY frustrating. A few searches deep and I see that in the Admin section I can at least revert to the old editor, but even that wasn't made clear by MKTO. The only good support is here in the forums. (I admit I'm in a cranky mood towards MKTO today)
Just FYI for folks on this thread, I'll be updating status for outstanding text editor issues in the following thread:
Please follow that and also let me know if there are additional things you'd like to see added.
Opened a case July 20th dealing with segmentation links being broken. No resolution currently but the engineers are working on a fix.
Created this discussion last week Segmentation with the New Rich Text Editor - Broken Links
We believe this issue involves the new email editor as the issue came up after it's implementation and programs created prior to it are not affected.
My Users have similar complain. More HTML involved for editing the any content, Window re-sizing is another problem. We reverted to legacy editor for my users. Images adjustment if really problem.
Colby:
You are absolutely correct about the 'new' editor version. Consider this validation. The only saving grace was to find out from Marketo Support that I could switch back to Legacy from the Admin site.
Blast those 'span' tags! They make formatting difficult. I'm always deleting them from the code to clean things up because they cause rendering problems.
Please send me an email with the functional issues you are experiencing. Again, we will not support both editors forever. We are making several improvements to the new editor and I do not want your issue to slip through the cracks. Please send me an email with a description of what's occurring that you aren't happy with.
Is there any way that you could stop the editor from modifying code that you copy and paste in? I find that the editor constantly modifies what I've done in Dreamweaver. It removes what it thinks to be "superfluous" <br> tags, as one example.
Slightly different gripe!
I much prefer editing the code myself in Dreamweaver then importing to avoid as many of these problems as I can. I've never trusted these editors and never will. If you can code it yourself, my advice is do it!
Phillip,
Same thing. Can you send me direct mail at jcooperman@marketo.com with the block of code you are inserting, and what you are seeing as the result. I will look into this for you.
Just FYI - I was working with another customer and realized that Dreamweaver code was being stripped/modified because it was using old/deprecated HTML syntax. The new editor will generally allow things as long as it is HTML5-compliant.
Thanks,
Justin
Done!
We were also pretty disappointed with the new editor. Main reason was the day the product was released, any emails we edited were getting broken. Link formatting lost and images disappearing. Just a huge headache and panic to all my European users who came online before I did as I'm East Coast. We had to switch it off that day (back to legacy version) from the Admin and haven't switched it on since.
Would love to start using it because overall it looks much cleaner but it seems there are too many issues currently and I don't want to inflict that on all my users! I'd be interested to hear about the planned improvements.
Ally,
Please send me email at jcooperman@marketo.com so I can look into your issues. This is extremely important, as we will not support the old editor indefinitely. We have been receiving great feedback from customers, and have fixed tons of issues already. The only way we can do this is with your help. I want to understand why your links or images were broken.
Thanks,
Justin
Hello All,
Thanks for this feedback. As Ed Masson pointed out, we are using TinyMCE. It was high time we updated it. However, it sounds like the transition was a bit tough. We'll take that into consideration for the future as we are working on some exciting new features related to the email and template experience.
If you'd like to get a sneak peek and provide feedback, let me know. We are opening usability testing to our Champions in the next 2 weeks and would love to get expert feedback.
Thanks,
Paul
for sure. please add. thanks.
Please include me as well Paul
Count me in!
Hi Paul - I would love to get a sneak peek and provide feedback of any enhancements planned for email editors/templates - specifically because we've been waiting for Marketo to stop removing specific code from our templates which break our responsive emails when viewed in different resolutions on Windows 8/10. We were told that this would be fixed in June, then August and now October. Here's my idea ( ) and discussion (Marketo is rewriting/omitting a significant amount of code in our responsive emails withint he HEAD ...) related to this.
Just opened a ticket. For some reason the new email editor is removing a background image whenever we open our emails. Revert to the old editor and the image stays put. Open using the new one and bam, it's gone. Why the heck would the new editor delete code? The entire bit of background image="http://urlhere" just vanishes in the html the second you open the email in the new editor. They are escalating and working on a fix but beware until then!
What is with the auto-formatting with the following:
(1) Auto padding between slices, despite setting the line spacing to single.
We would like slices to stack up beneath each other with out any auto-spacing. How can we go about doing this?
(2) Hyperlinks are showing up super tiny by default.
How can we go about removing the auto-formatting for good?
There's been a lot of mention in here about reverting to the old editor. How do you do that?
My team is finding the new editor to be clunky and confusing to use with icons that don't make a lot of sense. Additionally, we miss being able to see HTML and text side-by-side. It's so easy to send out an email now that has nothing in the text version -- because it's easy to miss the Text tab on the editor.
Go to the admin section. Then click email. Then click edit editor settings up at the top and select Legacy.
