Re: Munchkin works for other machines, but not mine

This is a weird one.

When I visit my pages with my machine, Marketo does not record any page visits (anony or otherwise).  I've tried with 3 different browsers, but each has no effect.

Just now, I asked my coworker to try hitting some pages from his location, and they were all recorded nearly instantly.

This doesn't make any sense to me.  Why would Marketo/Munchkin be discriminating against my machine?

Other details:
  • The two machines are on different networks (I'm working remotely today)
  • Both machines are Macbooks
  • I do not see any JS errors in the console
  • Both machines are hitting the same website

I'm really stumped.  Anyone have a hint?

Solution: In Web Page Report -> Setup, I had to set "Anonymous Visitors from ISPs" to "Shown".  My hits were being recorded the whole time, but I simply couldn't see them.

New (rhetorical) question:  Why would I want that hidden?  Why is it hidden by default?  Argh.

And again, no hits registered since 10:39am (it's 11:10am now), even though I've been hitting the site many times from two different browsers.

This makes it very hard to test stuff.

And now... suddenly 4 different leads suddenly started showing up with timestamps spanning the last 15 minutes.

Sometimes Marketo's web site is really snappy about reporting visits promptly, but I guess I can't count on it.  Maybe that has been my real problem the whole time...

I'm seeing the problem again right now.  I do have a _mkto_trk cookie.

It seems like it's probably not related to network.  It's just something that may randomly occur after I clear cookies.

It's currently 10:33am, I just refreshed the page, but Marketo's telling me that no one's visited since 10:21am (which was before I cleared cookies).

Grant - After you clear your cookies, is another cookie being placed on your brower by Munchkin?

If you open dev tools on Chrome, you should see a cookie with the name "_mkto_trk". Let me know if you are not seeing a cookie there?

DJ, I don't think I have any more details to give.  I load a page, and Marketo doesn't track it.  There are no errors in the js console.

The Munchkin library is pretty much a black box to me.  It returns no status or diagnostics for me to give you.

If there's anything else I can tell you, let me know, and I'll do it.

Hi DJ,

I'm not even seeing Anonymous activity.  (You're not the first to suggest that in this thread, and I've already addressed it.)

As I mentioned above, I've been looking at the Web Page Activity Report, sorted by Last Visit.  When I visit a page on my off network after clearing cookies, I don't see new activity AT ALL, anonymous or otherwise.

Hi Grant,

when you clear your cookies you would then be tracked as an anonymous lead till you fill out a form or click on an email link.

Could you please check your anonymous lead activity usng a Smart List.

When you mentioned that the 1x1 pixel image is successfully loading that is all that whould be needed to track munchkin activity. (http://www.quora.com/How-does-a-tracking-pixel-work)

Please let us know more details about the page you are testing and any missing activity.

regards,
DJ

I was able to reproduce this issue again in my office.

When I switched to our "guest" wifi network and reset Safari (i.e. cleared cookies and wiped history), Munchkin resumed ignoring all my pageviews.  Again, no errors in the js console.

Munchkin started working again after I switched back to my office network.  Strange.

I'd love to, but I don't have the rights to do that.  I will ask my Marketo admin.

Hey Grant,

Could you please log a support ticket so that we can take a closer look at this?

No, no clue.

Now that I'm back in the office, the same office as my coworkers, it's working as expected.

But that's actually horrible.  It means we have a condition where requests work from one network, but not from another.  (I'm fairly sure that the network I was on last week, at my in-laws's house, did not have a firewall.  Even if it did, why would it block http requests?)

Obviously, I kinda need Munchkin to work from everywhere.

Grant, any success getting to the bottom of this?

Manisha - Good thought, but in this case I'm not looking at a specific lead.  I'm looking at the Web Page Activity Report, which is a list of Leads that I then sort by Last Visit (descending).  When I visit from my machine and refresh, I don't see my Lead at the top.  When my coworker visits, I see his Lead.

Kenny - that gives a 1x1 pixel image, correct?  The request appears to be successful.

Hi Grant,
I actually had this same issue last week. For me, it turned out that because I've been involved with testing for various different leads, my Munchkin was linked to a different lead than I had expected. Could this be possible in your case?

Hi Grant,

When I referred to devtools, I mean the tools included in browsers for web developers.  You can access these by pressing F12 on windows or through the Tools menu on Mac.  This should bring up a docked window with several options including Network which allows you to monitor all of the http requests which occur on a page load.  We'd be looking for 'visitsWebPage' to [MunchkinId].mktoresp.com.  The request may be failing for some reason.

I'm not on a VPN.

I'm checking the activity with the Marketo web interface "Web Page Activity" viewer.  As I said, I can see my coworkers' activity, so I think I'm looking at the right place.

No, I am not using an ad-blocking or cookie-blocking browser extension.

I have tried this on Firefox, Safari, and Opera, none of which have an ad-blocker or cookie-blocker installed.

As Kirsten mentioned, are you running a browser extension like Ghostery or Adblock?

Maybe its the different networks. Do you have another computer at home that you can try? Are you on a VPN?

Also, where you checking the activity?

Cookies are definitely working.  No question.
