Munchkin code causes AJAX error in IE8

We're running a Drupal site with the Munchkin code embedded in the page template. This works fine, except for IE8, where the embedded code causes any and all AJAX functions of the site to return the error below:

An error occurred while attempting to process /views/ajax: Object expected

We're aware that Marketo does not officially support IE8 any longer, but if anyone ran into a similar issue it would be brilliant to hear how you managed/attempted to resolve it.
