Marketo cookie and progressive profiling

Hello,

In community here I saw:
Marketo knows who a lead is by reading the previously set cookie, this cookie can be set in the following ways.  If the lead:
·         Fills out a form
·         Clicks a link in a Marketo-sent Email
·         Was tagged with the SOAP/Munchkin APIs.(not applicable for Dimension Data)
I have question of “clicks link in Marketo sent email”
If you receives a nurture email from our account sent by Marketo(someone but not me), and you forward that email to me.
If I click on it, will Marketo think that I'm YOU moving forward until I identify myself differently (e.g. by clicking on an email sent to me directly from Marketo or by filling out a form with my real email address and info)?

How will turning off auto-population impact progressive profiling?

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks
Rashmi

Re: Marketo cookie and progressive profiling

Hi Rashmi! Yes, I believe once you click that email from someone else then Marketo will think that is you moving forward. Email links have tokens placed on them when they are sent. We had this issue when sales reps were forwarding email invitations for events to customers and when they clicked on the link to register, it prepopulated with the sales reps details.

We've started using the 'forward to a friend' feature in all our emails now to avoid this from happening.

Hope this helps!

Re: Marketo cookie and progressive profiling

Turning off autopopulation or prefill shouldn't impact progressive profiling at all.  They're two different capabilities.

Both use the same cookie,
--progressive profiling uses it to determine which fields to display
--prefill uses it to determine which data to include in the fields that are displayed.

If the target doesn't accept cookies or has deleted the Marketo cookie, neither progressive profiling or form prepopulation will work.
